These machines allow a metal blank to pass automatically through a carefully controlled sequence of forming operations, progressively developing it into a finished component.   This multi-stage approach makes it possible to manufacture deeper and more complex shapes than would normally be achieved in a single pressing operation. It also provides a repeatable and efficient production method for customers requiring consistent quantities of precision metal components.

What is a Platarg transfer press?

  A Platarg is a specialist multi-stage press designed for transfer pressing and deep drawing. The process typically begins with strip material being fed into the machine and cut to form an individual metal blank. Mechanical transfer fingers then move the blank from one tooling station to the next.   Each station performs a separate stage of the manufacturing process. Depending on the component, these operations can progressively draw, redraw, form, trim or pierce the metal until the completed pressing is discharged from the machine.   Unlike a conventional progression tool, the component is separated from the carrier strip near the beginning of the process. This gives the tooling greater freedom to work around the individual part and progressively develop deeper or more detailed forms.  

10-stage and 5-stage capability

  Bodill Parker operates both 10-stage and 5-stage Platarg machines, giving us flexibility when selecting the most appropriate production route for a component.   Our 10-stage machine provides additional forming positions for components requiring a longer sequence of drawing and finishing operations. Gradually forming the material over several stages can help control material flow, component shape and dimensional consistency.   The 5-stage machine is suited to components with a shorter or less complex forming sequence. It provides an efficient manufacturing route where fewer drawing and finishing operations are required.   Having both configurations allows Bodill Parker to assess each enquiry individually and develop a process around the component rather than applying a single manufacturing approach to every project.

  Platarg transfer pressing is particularly well suited to small components with a significant draw depth or a seamless cup-shaped construction.   Representative component types include:       The process can be considered for components used across sectors including automotive, electrical, electronics, industrial equipment, filtration, fluid-control systems, packaging and general engineering. More than a simple cup

  Although many deep-drawn pressings begin as a simple cylindrical form, additional features may be introduced as the component travels through the machine. Subject to component design, tooling and machine suitability, the production sequence may incorporate operations such as: Combining suitable operations within one automated production sequence can reduce separate handling and the need to move partly completed components between several individual presses.
